Johnson Center Renewal and Expansion Project

In keeping with the University’s commitment to support and promote the health and wellness of all students, faculty, and staff, a planning group has been working over the last several years to explore the possibility, including financial feasibility and campus support for renovating Johnson Center. The proposed renewal and expansion project is intended to increase access to recreational, fitness, health, and wellness resources for the entire UNM community. A planning effort of this scale requires input from the entire community, and we encourage you provide feedback using the form provided below. The information presented here does not imply project approval or inclusion of any features or amenities identified here in any future/potential expansion or renovation project.

Current Problems                                          Solutions

Limited access to facilities. Physical Education classes have priority.  Unable to work out or recreate when you want unless you register for a Physical Education class.

arrow

Work out when you want, on your schedule.  Separate facilities for weight training, aerobics, martial arts and many more.

Layout is confusing and difficult to navigate.  Limited open space.  Limited natural lighting.

arrow

Wide open spaces for meeting and socializing.  Navigation is simple due to open design.  Natural and efficient lighting.

Inefficient heating, ventilation and cooling.  Not sustainable or “green.”  Outdated plumbing and electrical adding to inefficient operation and high operating costs.

arrow

Upgrades and new heating and cooling systems.  Efficient plumbing and electrical systems would significantly reduce utility operational costs.

Fallen behind the standards and trends of peer universities. As the State’s flagship university, the recreation and wellness facilities are well below national standards.

A recreation and wellness center would instill pride and spirit within the University.  Aid in the recruitment and retention of students.  Add to the “Lobo Experience” and contribute significantly to campus life.

Building does not meet the needs of College of Education or Recreational Services.

Creating strategic partnerships with Education and Counseling and Recreational Services to offer services and facilities that compliment each other and take a collaborative approach to education and providing for the health and well being of the campus.

What It Could Be

The following photos offer a comparison of what is currently at Johnson Center and what other intuitions offer their students.

Climbing Wall

unm climbing wall  The climbing wall at UNM is part of the High Ropes Course and not
available for the public to use. It is of wood plank construction, located
outside, and while very safe, not attractive or functional. The signature
component of most new recreation centers is the climbing wall.
