Here at Johnson Center we offer a full size Olympic pool, a 25 yard 7 lane lap swim pool, and a therapy pool. These facilities support a range of activities including lane/lap swimming, aquatic fitness, and many other fun activities. So come splash around!
The Olympic Pool will be closed through Wednesday, May 16, 2012, as a precautionary measure. An individual who is known to be infected with Cryptosporidium recently swum in the Olympic Pool. That does not mean that Crypto was contracted in our pool. It just means that an individual with Crypto did swim in the Olympic Pool.
Cryptosporidium, more commonly referred to as Crypto (krip-TOE), is a germ that causes diarrhea. This germ is found in the fecal matter of a person who has been infected by Crypto. It has a tough outer shell that allows it to survive for a long time in the environment. It can survive for days even in properly chlorinated pools.
Once someone is tested positive for crypto, any aquatic facility visited within 2 weeks of the test must be “super chlorinated” for 24 hours as a precaution against spreading the infection. Super chlorination means chlorine levels will be 4 times greater than levels considered safe for humans by the State of New Mexico. After the pool has sat at this level for 24 hours it must be brought back down to safe levels before anyone is permitted to enter the water. All locker rooms, showers, lavatories, decks have be disinfected.
Johnson Pool is available for lap swimming only during posted hours. If you have any questions please call our Aquatic Manager at 277-5980.
The Olympic and Therapy pools will be on an Intersession schedule from May 14, 2012 - June 3, 2012 and closed on the weekends. On June 4, 2012 the summer hours will begin.
You can print out the Swim Lessons registration form! Just print it out, fill out the required information, and bring it down to Johnson Center's Front Office to pay.
The Summer Swim Lesson Schedule is now available and classes will start on June 4, 2012.
